Students express dissatisfaction with Rowan University dining halls

Some students who attend Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J., say they aren’t satisfied with the dining options.

Rowan University Dining is chained with Gourmet Dining Services, LLC. Two main dining halls on campus for students are The Marketplace and Glassworks Eatery at Holly Pointe Commons.

The Marketplace is located on the first floor in the Chamberlain Student Center. This dining hall offers live cooking, stations that allow you to prep your own meals such as salads and sandwiches, and an allergen friendly station for those who have dietary restrictions. The Marketplace is intended to welcome all Rowan students by providing classic food (such as pizza, burgers, chicken tenders, and fries) but also providing international foods (such as Italian, Asian, and Latin)

Glassworks Eatery at Holly Pointe Commons is located in the heart of Holly Pointe Commons housing community. This dining hall offers an allergen friendly station that avoids cooking with the top 8 allergens (milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat.)

Deja Moore, a senior at Rowan, said she would like the campus to offer more healthier foods. “My dining experience at Rowan hasn’t been that great. I lived on campus for three semesters and during my time here I’ve only visited the dining hall in the Student Center two times. I rather go to Profs because the food taste a lot better compared to the other dining halls. Although it’s better I do believe they should consider adding more healthier foods,” Moore said. Moore wasn’t aware that Rowan gives students an opportunity to text feedback to dining hall managers.  Moore stated, “I wouldn’t mind giving the managers feedback but I don’t believe it will be taken into consideration because the campus dining halls are owned by a chain.”

Moore isn’t the only student on campus who isn’t satisfied with the dining halls on campus. Teirique Robinson, a junior at Rowan, said he believes the campus food can be better. Robinson said, “I like to have breakfast at Holly Pointe but I avoid The Marketplace because the food isn’t all that great. I also don’t text feedback to managers because I believe they won’t make a change to the food.”

Elizabeth Jordan, resident district manager at Rowan University, suggested that students use the text feedback more often because they do take the feedback into consideration. Jordan stated, “Feedback is very useful because we are in a perpetual state of change. The team is always looking for ways to improve quality and service.”

The event was held for approximately 12 hours and was organized by City Council President Frank Moran. It was hosted by Senator Nelsa Cruz and the City Council of Camden.  The event was intended to raise $100,000 dollars but they ended up raising a little over $135,000 dollars from donations. Volunteers were expected to sign in first by providing their first and last name. Once they were found they were offered a T-shirt that read, “Unidos para Puerto Rico” which means United for Puerto Rico, an admit one ticket for lunch, and a name tag. Each volunteer had a specific time they were supposed to stand on street corners by traffic lights and stop signs with a bucket to ask pedestrians and drivers if they would like to donate to help Puerto Rico.

They stored items such as soap, shampoo, conditioner, sunblock, deodorant, toothpaste, and etc into sealable plastic bags. When the care bags were completed they were put into a box that was later wrapped with plastic. Margarita Roman a community member of Camden was a volunteer at the event on Sunday. I decided to volunteer today because I have family who is currently residing in Puerto Rico and also it’s a great cause. Puerto Rico is in desperate need of help and I think it’s very important we take initiative and raise money for them.” Roman also shared with me that her purpose for volunteering today was to show her children the correct steps that should be taken to help Puerto Rico. She stated, “I think it’s great that we are all able to come together and unite for Puerto Rico. It’s such a great cause and what the City Council has done is definitely being took into consideration by many Hispanics.”
